The Story

Speightstown 1630

Speightstown is located on the north west coast of Barbados, and is one of the island’s major towns, boasting a long and intriguing history. Settled around 1630, its name is derived from William Speight, who owned the land where the town is located.

In the 17th century, Speightstown was a major port with ships regularly arriving from England. Schooners ran between Speightstown and the capital city Bridgetown. Ships laden with sugar and other commodities left Speightstown bound directly for London and especially Bristol. For this reason, Speightstown is sometimes known as Little Bristol, and the “quaint town” has now become the centre of a tourist area as well as a northerly shopping district
